Professor Eva Untersmayr-Elsenhuber is a specialist in clinical immunology who founded and leads the Gastrointestinal Immunology research group at the Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research, Medical University of Vienna. Her research focuses on the relationship between mucosal barrier function, the microbiota and immune mediated diseases, including ME/CFS, post-COVID syndrome and allergies.
Alongside her research, she is actively involved in patient care, looking after patients with ME/CFS, post-COVID syndrome and allergies. Her interest in ME/CFS grew out of this clinical work, and her group has since built basic research projects in the area, including work towards a dedicated ME biobank at the Medical University of Vienna.
She currently sits on the executive board of the Austrian Society for Allergology and Immunology and chairs several EAACI working groups. Professor Untersmayr-Elsenhuber is coordinator of DISCOVER-ME, the Horizon Europe funded EMERG-led research project focused on ME/CFS.
